Not sure which Mac? Apple menu → About This Mac. “Apple M1” or later means Apple Silicon; anything that says Intel means the other one. A browser cannot tell any of these apart, which is why this page asks instead of guessing.
What the first run does
It downloads nothing
No models, no runtime, no second installer. The disk image is the whole app, so the first launch works with the network off.
It asks which folder
Choosing a workspace is the first thing you do. macOS asks its own permission the first time the app reaches into Desktop, Documents, Downloads or an external volume. Indexing runs in the background and can be cancelled and resumed.
It writes beside your files
One database file and a few coii- folders for thumbnails, proxies and backups, all inside the folder you chose. Move the folder and the workspace goes with it.
Requirements
- macOS — 11 Big Sur or later, Apple Silicon or Intel.
- Disk for thumbnails and proxies, in proportion to how many files you index. They live in the workspace folder, not a hidden Library directory.
- The disk images are signed and notarised by Riff Tech, Inc., so the first open is an ordinary one. No right-click → Open. Linux has no equivalent gate and the AppImage is not signed; the checksum on the release page is what to compare against.
